Just a Day at the Ballpark

by Justin on March 13, 2008

One of the great things about living in the Phoenix area is the fact that it really is a great sports town, even if it does not get the respect that it deserves. While Arizona may not be home to the number of professional sports championships that other cities like Boston and New York have, but we perennially have championship quality teams such as the Diamondbacks and the Suns. But more importantly we have a year-round sports culture through the basketball, baseball, hockey, and football seasons and we have the “bonus” seasons of the PGA tour and Baseball’s Spring Training.

Ah, Arizona Spring Training, known as the Cactus League, the whole reason that I am writing this today. Yesterday my company decided to take half the day and enjoy a day at the ballpark. We are graced with the fact that our office is located just a couple miles down the road from Phoenix Municipal Stadium, the Spring Training home of The Oakland Athletics. We ventured to the park to see the A’s take on the hometown Arizona Diamondbacks.

Normally the Diamondbacks hold spring training in Tucson. So it was a treat to see them up here, and apparently I was not the only one to think so, the game was virtually sold out, and the normally half-empty parking lot for the ballpark was filled to the point that we were turned away with only three cars standing between us and the hot asphalt. After circling the park a few times I found a nice swath of dirt on the side of the road (after driving over a curb, which makes me happy that I have a Jeep so that I can do that) to park, just on the other side of the Left Field wall. My only concern at that point was any home runs that may fly my Jeep’s way.

While the Diamondbacks did not win they at least gave us some promising hope for the upcoming season. They looked good, as the A’s did too. In all it was a good day to enjoy an Ice Cold beer in the sun.
